"The Hair" Musical in Plovdiv and Burgas

Plovdiv State Opera, in cooperation with the cultural organization "Art Music Atelier", presents the cult musical "Hair", by Gerome Ragni, James Rado and composer Galt MacDermot.

The production is directed by Veselka Kuncheva, conducted by Konstantin Dobroykov, with set design and costumes by Marieta Golomokhova, choreography by Yavor Kunchev, and Gergana Mantırlıeva as assistant costume designer.

The soloists include Niketza, Tzveti Penyashki, Elena Sirakova, Edith Undzhiyan, Michael Fleming, Yoan Popov, Gergana Tsakova, Kalina Kostova, Gergina Peykova, Gabriela Stamova, Elin Stoyanova, Mihaela Goncheva and Todor Borisov, supported by the choir, ballet and orchestra of the Plovdiv Opera.

Following the glamorous premiere at the Ancient Theatre in Plovdiv on August 24, "Hair" embarks on its first guest performance, with Burgas among the first cities selected. The performance will take place on September 24, at 7 PM. Great interest is expected, judging by the success in Plovdiv. The hall is expected to be filled with emotional tension while waiting for the beginning. The audience, of diverse ages and styles, radiate impatience.

Created in 1967, "Hair" has established itself among the Top 10 most successful musicals of all time, and six of its songs are in the ranking of the 100 greatest hits of the 20th century according to "Billboard".

The Plovdiv Opera production differs from the well-known film version, returning to the roots of the work and its authentic spirit. The directorial concept is innovative, with impressive set design and dynamic performance.

shares Maestro Konstantin Dobroykov, emphasizing the different interpretation and stage innovations. The set design is conceived to evoke a sense of wind and movement, and the costumes, incorporating military symbols, transform into an explosion of colors, symbolizing the victory of life over war.

Director Veselka Kuncheva emphasizes that "Hair" is more than a musical – it is an act of defiance, a ritual of rejection of the normal, the comfortable, the taken for granted.

"The true meaning of "Hair" is not in the hippie-romanticism. It"s not in the hairstyles, clothes or nostalgia. It"s in the refusal. In the refusal to accept death as an obligation. In the refusal to bow down to the new hero, the new party, the new general, who will send you to your death with a patriotically stretched-to-the-top smile."

This is not a performance offering comfort, but a question: Whom do you choose? Because the choice is bodily and spiritual, life or death, personal freedom or foreign power.

"“HAIR” is neither a commemoration nor a musical celebration. “HAIR” is a warning. Because nothing is over. The wars continue. Only the geographical coordinates change. And as long as there are those who remember, there will be those who resist. Peace now. Freedom now."
