Regional Historical Museum - Burgas officially launched archaeological excavations in the medieval city of Rusokastro for the year 2025. The scientific team focused its attention on the western fortress wall, which stretches an impressive 300 meters.

Previous studies have covered approximately two-thirds of the defensive structure - around 200 meters, including five strategic defensive towers. Experts plan to proceed with detailed design of conservation and restoration activities after fully revealing the fortification system.

Financing for the large-scale archaeological project is secured from three main sources: Kameno Municipality with 50,000 leva, Ministry of Culture with 63,000 leva, and the Council of Ministers with 100,000 leva. The total sum of 213,000 leva will support in-depth scientific research.

Rusokastro is identified as an extremely significant national archaeological site with potential to enrich Bulgaria's tourist map. The Burgas museum team has already invited volunteers to participate in the upcoming excavations during the hot summer months.

The scientific team expects the discoveries to shed additional light on the largest medieval city in Southern Bulgaria and its historical significance.
