"The Devil Wears Prada 2" arrived on Bulgarian screens with the reputation of being one of the most anticipated sequels of the year. Even with the trailers and posters featuring the star-studded cast – Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci – the expectations were for a "grand return": the same acerbic humor, the same glamour, the same world where a single remark can crush an entire career. For many viewers, this was not just a premiere, but a reunion with their own cinematic past.
After the first screenings, however, it became clear that the film is different from what many had imagined. Critics describe it as more mature, more melancholic, and more topical, and the first viewer ratings even place it slightly above the original, with the caveat that the magic this time comes not from pure gloss, but from the clash between nostalgia and the new reality of media and fashion.
Expectation: "the same Miranda, the same euphoria"
The expectation for "The Devil Wears Prada 2" was almost mathematically clear: viewers wanted the same Miranda Priestly who walks into a room and stops the air; the same dynamic between boss and assistants; the same brilliant, slightly cruel, but fun world of fashion magazines. On social media before the premiere, people admitted they were buying tickets "to go back to 2006" and see if the characters would be "wearing the same Prada".
Many viewers entered the theater with the mood that they would watch a sequel that mainly "plays it safe" – repeats the formula, adds a few new faces, and even higher heels. Some critics also expressed skepticism before the premiere, questioning the point of returning to such an iconic story so many years later.
Reality: less of a fairy tale, more of a mirror
The actual film moves in a different direction. "The Devil Wears Prada 2" is visually beautiful, easy to watch, but with a significantly stronger emphasis on industry changes – the decline of print media, the rise of digital platforms, and the battle for advertising budgets in a new media environment. The story follows the conflict between Miranda Priestly and her former assistant Emily Charlton, who is now her real competitor in a leadership position – a thread that adds bitterness to the glamour.
The plot retains the feeling of a "good, sincere story," but this time it is more instructive and written for a new generation of viewers. Instead of wrapping everything in a pure fairy tale, the second film shows the price of success in a world where algorithms and metrics weigh almost as much as good taste – and sometimes more.
Impressions: "smarter than I expected" versus "I liked it, but no wow"
The first viewer reviews are indicative of the divided, yet largely positive, impressions. Comments like "the film turned out to be much smarter than I expected" and "I got more than nostalgia" are common on social media. Viewers praise the acting performances, especially Meryl Streep's, and appreciate the fact that the characters have grown – they are not "frozen" in the last scene of the first film.
On the other hand, there are more moderate reactions: "I liked it, but it's not the first one", "it's good, but it doesn't have the same effect", or "it will be watched, it will be quoted, but there is no euphoria like before". Some viewers admit they expected more laughter and fewer dramatic notes, and some script decisions seem too safe or predictable to them.
What the critics say: solidly "liked", not "shattering"
According to critical assessments, "The Devil Wears Prada 2" stands firmly in the "good to very good" film zone. The sequel receives a high share of positive reviews and an average score that places it above many other sequels. This means that professional critics see it as a high-quality, well-acted, and topical continuation, even if it is not a work that redefines the genre.
The positives most often highlighted are the topical subject matter, the strong acting performances, and the "pleasant, well-dosed mixture of humor and emotion". At the same time, reviews criticize underdeveloped secondary characters and some caricatured images related to new technology and influencer culture – moments that sometimes cause slight discomfort instead of laughter.
Audience ratings: higher than the first part, but without the euphoria
An interesting detail is that, according to the first data from audience surveys, the film is being received even better than the original. In some audience rating systems, the sequel receives a higher overall score than the first film – a sign that the general audience left the theater pleasantly surprised rather than disappointed.
At the same time, the feeling of a cult status, which the first film gradually built over the years, is missing. Rather, we have a title that viewers say: "It's worth it, it's well-made, I'll recommend it" – but without that unanimous "I will watch this every year" that is often attached to the original.
Expectations versus reality: what remains after the credits
If we boil everything down to the "expectation – reality – impression" formula, the picture looks like this: expectations were often for pure nostalgia and repetition, the reality is a more mature, more topical, and more serious film, and the impression is a mixture of satisfaction and slight bewilderment – not because "The Devil Wears Prada 2" is weak, but because it doesn't play by the simplest nostalgic rules.

For the Bulgarian audience, this means that if you are going into the theater just to "turn back time" to the lightness of 2006, you might be surprised. But if you are ready to see the characters and the industry 20 years later – with wrinkles, compromises, and new realities – "The Devil Wears Prada 2" will likely strike you as a smarter and more honest sequel than you yourself expected.
