The upcoming presentation of a scientific work promises to reveal previously unexplored aspects of children's daily life in post-socialist Bulgaria. On July 17, 2025, in the courtyard of the Ethnographic Museum in Burgas, the book "Education and Children's Games in Post-Socialism", developed by researcher Dr. Plamena Kirova, will be presented.
The monograph aims to provide an in-depth look at the transformations in the children's world after 1989. The author sets the ambitious task of analyzing two key aspects – educational practices and play models that undergo significant changes during the period of social changes.
The scientific work traces the evolution of children's games, documenting the processes of the decline of traditional forms and the emergence of new ones. The study registers the factors that shape the characteristics of childhood in this transitional period, offering a unique perspective on social transformations.
Dr. Kirova presents the activities of museums and organizations that adapt educational methods through innovative play approaches. Her monograph illuminates previously little-studied areas of the contemporary ethnology of childhood.
The scientific publication has been reviewed by distinguished academic authorities. Prof. Margarita Karamihova from the University of Veliko Tarnovo is the scientific supervisor, and Prof. Diana Radoynova from the University of Burgas will present the scientific contributions of the research.
Prof. Radoynova emphasizes the exceptional value of the work, defining the world of children in Bulgaria as "almost terra incognita for Bulgarian ethnological science". The book is a significant contribution to understanding social changes through the eyes of the youngest generation.
The biographical information about the author reveals her professional path. Plamena Kirova has been part of the team at the Regional Historical Museum - Burgas since 2007. She has successively acquired educational degrees in ethnology – a bachelor's from the University of Plovdiv (2005), a master's from the University of Veliko Tarnovo (2018), and a doctoral degree in ethnology (2023).
The publication will be available for purchase at the Ethnographic Exhibition and represents a mandatory read for researchers, educators, and all those interested in the social history of contemporary Bulgaria.
