On August 20, 2025, Bulgaria will mark the 1108th anniversary of one of the most significant battles in European medieval history - the Battle of Achelous River. This epochal battle, which took place in 917, was a triumph of the Bulgarian Tsar Simeon I over the Byzantine forces led by commander-in-chief Leo Phocas.

Historical sources testify to the scale of this military clash, which is still considered one of the grandest in medieval Europe. Tsar Simeon I, known for his military strategy and personal bravery, took direct part in the battle, leading the heavy cavalry of the Bulgarian army. His tactical mastery led to a complete defeat of the Byzantine forces, which were pushed towards the sea, surrounded, and almost completely destroyed.

An interesting historical fact related to the Battle of Achelous is the introduction of a new ritual in the Bulgarian military tradition. At the request of Tsar Simeon I, for the first time in Bulgarian history, a blessing of the battle flags was performed before the battle - a custom that subsequently became an integral part of military ceremonies.

Solemn Celebration in the Town of Achelous

To honor the memory of this historic victory, the residents of Achelous town, together with Pomorie municipality and the local community center "Svetlina 1934", are organizing a solemn celebration. The event will begin at 19:00 on August 20, 2025, with a festive procession that will start from the community center building and head towards the monument in the town park.

At the monument, a commemorative ceremony will be held, including a memorial prayer for the fallen warriors. A speech will be delivered on the historical significance of the Battle of Achelous and its contribution to strengthening the Bulgarian statehood. Officials and citizens will lay wreaths and flowers at the monument of Tsar Simeon the Great, paying tribute to the memory of the great Bulgarian ruler and his warriors.

The festive program will continue from 20:00 at the open-air stage in the town park with a concert showcasing the richness of Bulgarian culture and traditions. The evening will conclude with an impressive fireworks display, symbolizing the glory of Bulgarian arms and the timelessness of the Bulgarian spirit.

The organizers from Pomorie municipality, Achelous town hall, and the Community Center "Svetlina 1934" Achelous extend a heartfelt invitation to all Bulgarian citizens and guests of the town to join the celebration, to pay tribute to Bulgaria's glorious past and to touch the greatness of Bulgarian history.

This solemn celebration will not only commemorate one of the most brilliant victories in Bulgarian military history but also highlight the enduring significance of the Battle of Achelous for shaping Bulgarian national identity and establishing Bulgaria as a strong European state during the Middle Ages.
