Burgas Free University will open its 2026/2027 academic year on October 5 with a ceremony in the university's atrium, the school says. This year marks 35 years since the university was founded.
Right after the opening ceremony, first-year students will meet staff from their centre's dean's office, where they'll get their student record books and learn how to use the university's online systems.
Rector professor Milen Baltov told BTA that more than 270 foreign students and PhD candidates from 12 countries across four continents — Europe, Asia, Africa and South America — study at the university. Over the past academic year, 130 foreign students and PhD candidates came to Burgas on long- or short-term exchanges, 110 of them from EU countries.
The anniversary has prompted a series of events, including a formal conference held under the patronage of Bulgaria's president, Iliana Yotova.
The Grand National Assembly voted to set up Burgas Free University on September 18, 1991.
