One person has lost their life, and 23 others were injured in a total of 18 serious road accidents that occurred in the country over the last 24 hours. The data was released by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, which monitors the road situation daily.

The capital was also not spared from the traffic chaos. In Sofia alone, two serious accidents and 21 other minor incidents were registered. As a result of the incidents, five people were injured. The grim statistics for the last 24 hours fit into the overall, increasingly bleak road toll since the beginning of the year. From January 1st to date, there have been 4633 road accidents in the country, in which 5823 people were injured, and 295 were killed. These figures continue to be a troubling signal about the state of road safety in Bulgaria.

New Changes to the Road Traffic Act

Against the backdrop of these tragic events, the long-awaited changes to the Road Traffic Act, which were voted on by parliament and promulgated in a issue of "State Gazette" from August 5, 2025, come into force today. The new rules affect drivers of motor vehicles, drivers of electric mobility devices, as well as pedestrians and cyclists.

The State Agency "Road Safety" (SARA) prepared a detailed analysis that explains the key changes in the law. It was published as part of a joint section with the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) under the motto "On the road, life has priority". Experts from the agency emphasize that the goal of the new provisions is to reduce the number of road incidents and improve safety for all road users.
