Burgas Municipality focuses on forest fire prevention
To limit the damage from potential fire disasters, the Municipality of Burgas has launched a large-scale campaign to build and renew mineralized strips around the most high-risk areas. These are 6-meter-wide zones where vegetation is completely removed down to the mineral soil layer, creating a natural barrier against fire.
The main purpose of the mineralized strips is to stop the spread of fires towards urbanized territories and to prevent the flames from spreading from populated areas to forest massifs.
Where are the protective facilities being built?
The locations were selected following an analysis of past incidents. Protective strips are being established around:
- The town of Balgarovo and the "Banevo" district
- The "Rudnik" and "Cherno More" districts
- The "Ostritcata" villa zone and the "Mineralni Bani" area
- The lands of the villages of Izvorishte and Mirolyubovo
Important warning to property owners
Given the high summer temperatures and the active fire danger season, the Municipality of Burgas reminds: owners are obliged to clear their properties of dry grass and bushes. The deadline for completion is June 30, 2026, after which inspections and sanctions will follow.
These measures are part of the international project Med-IREN, implemented with the support of the EU's Horizon Europe program, aiming to increase the resilience of critical infrastructure through engineering and nature-based solutions.
