New Windows 11 Security Update Disrupts Operation of Popular SSD Drives
Windows 11 users are reporting serious problems with certain SSD models after installing the latest security update (KB5063878). Although the patch aims to improve the operating system's security, it leads to unexpected incompatibility with specific devices.
Among the affected models are Fikwot FN955, Corsair Force MP600, KIOXIA EXCERIA PLUS G4, and SanDisk Extreme PRO M.2 NVMe 3D SSD – all with Phison PS5012-E12 controller. Most often, problems arise when attempting to write large files over 50 GB, such as during game installations, with users reporting inability to read data, diagnostic issues, or risk of file corruption. On SSD drives without DRAM buffer, the error may appear even with smaller writes.
Access to the SSD drive sometimes recovers after a restart, but attempting another large write causes the problems to recur. Unofficial information suggests that the causes may be a "memory leak" in the operating system or improper driver functioning, which causes controller failure.
Microsoft has not yet issued an official statement on the issue.
