The Council of Ministers today took a decisive step towards strengthening the Bulgarian diplomatic service, proposing the appointment of a total of 20 high-ranking diplomatic representatives. Against the backdrop of prolonged internal political discussions, the government submitted an official proposal to the president for the issuance of decrees for the appointment of 19 new ambassadors and one permanent representative to the United Nations (UN).

Statement by Minister Georgiev

This important step was announced by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Georgi Georgiev, during today's government meeting. In his statement, the minister expressed his satisfaction that this process "is finding its way forward", emphasizing that this is key to ensuring the "continuity of the diplomatic service".

According to Minister Georgiev, these appointments should have been coordinated at the beginning of the year, but the process was hindered. He pointed out that the government has strictly adhered to all constitutional and legal provisions, and the 20 proposed diplomats are experienced and highly qualified career diplomats. In his statement, he made a sharp comment regarding the political obstacles that accompanied the procedure. "I believe that the diplomatic service should not be held hostage to internal political attempts to usurp powers and abuse procedures", the minister stated. He emphasized that the work of diplomatic representatives is directly related to the image of our country to the world and our international partners. "The more solid and consolidated we are, the more authoritatively we are perceived by our partners", he added, outlining the importance of Bulgaria's unified and strong position on the international stage.

Decision of the Council of Ministers

After the statement by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov confirmed that the proposal will be made today with a decision of the Council of Ministers. The proposal to the president for the issuance of the appointment decrees is the final step on the part of the executive branch in this long-awaited process.

This large-scale reshuffle is expected to inject new energy into Bulgarian diplomacy, filling important positions abroad and ensuring continuity in the state's work. Observers note that the process of appointing ambassadors often becomes a field for political clashes, but the current government is striving to overcome these difficulties, acting in accordance with the law and in the interest of national security and prestige.
