Road Safety Crisis: Record Number of Fatalities in 2025
The situation on Bulgarian roads is becoming increasingly alarming. According to data from the Institute for Road Safety (IRS), 16 people have died in just the last 10 days – an increase of nearly 170% compared to the same period last year. Since the beginning of the year, the number of fatalities has already reached 190, which is 30 more compared to last year.
The current model for dealing with this problem is completely exhausted. Bulgaria does not need another PR campaign or a pointless meeting, the IRS states firmly.
What does the Institute for Road Safety demand?
- The development of an entirely new Road Safety Management Strategy with external expert assistance.
- A professional risk analysis and the introduction of clear personal accountability.
- Setting measurable goals and implementing systemic solutions instead of temporary measures.
The data from the last 24 hours is particularly grim: 26 serious accidents in which four people lost their lives and 29 were injured. Experts warn that any institutional inaction directly leads to new human tragedies.
