A large-scale initiative for social support of vulnerable underage migrants has officially started in Bulgaria. On July 18, 2025, the State Agency for Refugees announced an ambitious experimental model for care and protection of unaccompanied children.
The project brings together the efforts of four municipal administrations - Burgas, Ivaylovgrad, Malko Tarnovo and Tundzha, together with international partners. Key participants include the Mission of the International Organization for Migration and UNICEF Bulgaria.
The leading goal of the initiative is to build a modern system of social services that guarantees maximum protection of the rights of unaccompanied child migrants. The project focuses on creating alternative care mechanisms that meet contemporary international standards for humanitarian support.
