The energy group OMV has started commercial production of natural gas from the Wittau field near Vienna, which is described as the most significant discovery in Austria in the last four decades and an important step toward greater energy independence for the country.

Austrian company OMV has announced that it has launched the first phase of the development of the Wittau gas field in Lower Austria, northeast of Vienna. The project is based on the exploratory well Wittau Tief-2a, which confirmed the presence of significant natural gas reserves and paved the way for a new stage for the national energy industry. According to the company, the development is structured so that production will increase in stages over the coming years, depending on market conditions and technical progress.

According to preliminary estimates, about 48 TWh of natural gas can be extracted from the field, which is equivalent to approximately 4.2 billion cubic meters. The full commissioning of the project is expected to double OMV's gas production in Austria and increase national output by about 50% in the long term. This means that a significant portion of domestic consumption will be covered by local sources rather than imports, which is particularly important in the context of volatile prices and geopolitical tensions in global energy markets.

In the first stage, OMV plans an annual production of around 1 billion cubic meters of gas, with investments for its realization amounting to approximately 150 million euros. The company presents the project as a key element for strengthening the country's energy security in conditions of limited supplies from traditional external sources. OMV emphasizes that the development of Wittau is in compliance with current environmental standards and includes modern technologies for monitoring and controlling environmental impact.

The Wittau field was identified as early as 2023, when OMV announced the largest new natural gas reserves in Austria in 40 years. Since then, the project has been developed rapidly, with the goal that local production will cover a larger portion of consumption and reduce Austria's dependence on gas imports. In parallel with technical preparations, the necessary connections to the existing network were built so that gas from Wittau could quickly reach consumers and industry.

The development of Wittau comes against the backdrop of wider changes in Europe's energy map. Following the reduction and interruption of Russian supplies, a number of countries are looking for new gas sources and accelerating their own projects. The Austrian example shows that even relatively small markets can reduce their external vulnerability through investments in local resources and diversification of supplies. The new field is also expected to contribute to greater flexibility in regional markets in Central Europe.

In parallel with the development of new gas fields, OMV and other companies in the country are also working on hydrogen and renewable energy projects as part of a longer-term transition to a lower-carbon economy. Nevertheless, natural gas remains an important "transition" energy source to ensure security of supply in the coming years, when the share of renewable sources still cannot fully cover needs. In this context, Wittau is becoming a strategic asset for Austria – both for the national energy balance and for the country's position in the European gas market.
