The Bulgarian tourism sector is preparing for the summer 2026 season, focusing on security in light of the unstable situation in the Middle East. Measures to protect consumers are being discussed.

The summer tourist season is approaching, and with it, the questions that concern both the industry and ordinary people. What will happen to our vacations against the backdrop of the unstable situation in the Middle East? The answer, of course, is not straightforward, but the Ministry of Tourism, together with business representatives and the Consumer Protection Commission, is trying to find solutions.

The Stake - Security and Predictability

Minister Irena Georgieva clearly stated the priorities - Bulgaria must offer tourists a sense of security and reliability. This is especially important at a time when the geopolitical situation in the region is tense. The meeting was also attended by the Bulgarian tourism attachés in Poland, Germany and Turkey, which clearly shows the strategic orientation of the ministry.

It is interesting that at the moment reservations maintain relative stability, with a slight increase of about 1%. Where is the key to this success? Mainly, it seems, in the markets of Central and Eastern Europe.

Poland - a reliable partner, but...

Poland continues to be among the most stable partners for Bulgarian tourism. Bulgaria is among the leading destinations for Poles, which is a good sign, especially considering the competitive price advantage we have. But there are also challenges. Increased transport costs are putting pressure on prices. There has also been some slowdown in bookings in recent weeks. It is clear that the business must be flexible and adapt to the changes.

Lack of staff - an old problem, new challenges

The shortage of labor continues to be a serious problem for the sector. Although the procedures for short-term employment have not been delayed, it is necessary to further facilitate the processes. Whether this will happen on time remains to be seen. But the stakes are high - quality staff is key to good service and to the impressions of tourists.

Domestic tourism - a lifeline?

The industry emphasizes the role of domestic tourism in stabilizing the season. Is this enough? We will see. More active advertising to encourage Bulgarians to travel would be a useful step, but it alone is unlikely to be sufficient. Perhaps it is also necessary to think about new incentives that will make vacations in Bulgaria even more attractive for Bulgarians themselves.

Measures to protect consumers

Specific measures to address the problems have been identified at the meeting. One of them is an information campaign aimed at consumers. It is important for people to know their rights and be informed about the advantages of organized travel. Joint work with the Consumer Protection Commission is of crucial importance. The acting chairman Alexander Kolyachev emphasizes the benefit of this campaign, because the informed consumer is better protected.

Meetings with insurance companies will also be held. The aim is to develop products that cover travel risks. This is an important step, especially in today's uncertain environment.

What's next?

Minister Georgieva concluded the meeting with an optimistic message. Bulgaria is preparing for the summer season, coordinating actions between institutions and business. It is ready to offer security and quality. But will this be enough to attract tourists? We will see.

Ultimately, the upcoming summer season will be a test for the tourism sector in Bulgaria. Will we be able to cope with the challenges and maintain our positions on the world tourism map? The answer depends on many factors, including the geopolitical situation, which is beyond our control.
