Poet Nedyalko Yordanov is looking for a new home for a cat named Lucky and a dog named Sharo, who live in the yard of his house in Burgas, after the man who cared for them died. Hours after he posted about it on Facebook, a woman from Plovdiv who had recently lost her own cat came forward and agreed to take Lucky in. Offers have also come in for Sharo.
The man who looked after the two animals died at 91. He had lived on the ground floor of the house for 34 years and, whenever the family was away from Burgas — which happens for about nine months a year — he fed Lucky and Sharo and kept an eye on them.
Yordanov wrote that he now has trouble getting around and cannot take the animals with him to Sofia, where he is due back in a few days. His wife, Ivana Dzhedzheva, has been seriously ill for two years. He said parting with the animals was a very hard decision.
Lucky is 12, white, blind from birth and gentle, and has spent almost her whole life in the Burgas yard, which she knows inside out. Sharo is 14. With Lucky going to the woman in Plovdiv, the poet will still be able to see the cat.
"I'm ready to give her to someone who will truly take care of her, as long as I have a guarantee she'll be well looked after," Yordanov wrote about Lucky. For Sharo, the plan had been a shelter if no other option turned up — but offers have already come in.
The post drew hundreds of reactions. Yordanov says he did not expect to be criticized while mourning the man who had lived in his home, and that his request still stands. He says there is no dispute over who owns the animals, no conflict, and no one he would need to ask before giving them away.
Years ago, Lucky was taken from the yard, which led to a clash with an animal rights group. Officials stepped in, and under public pressure the cat was returned to the poet. The case drew wide public attention at the time. Yordanov said he never asked for anyone to be punished, since Lucky had simply gone back home.
Back in 2023, he spoke publicly about the two animals, calling them among the creatures dearest to him in Burgas. Of the man who cared for them, he said he loved them as if they were his own.
