Green Revolution in Burgas and Pleven: Large-Scale Air Improvement through Innovative Greening

The municipalities of Burgas and Pleven are launching large-scale ecological initiatives that will change the quality of atmospheric air through innovative green solutions. The projects, financed under the Environmental Program 2021-2027, provide for the construction of a total of 25.73 hectares of new green infrastructure in the two cities.

The key objective of the interventions is to directly reduce fine particulate matter (PM10) emissions by strategically expanding urban green spaces. Experts have developed a precise planting plan based on an in-depth geospatial analysis with 12 specific indicators.

The methodology includes a detailed study of the so-called "hot spots" with high particulate matter concentration, taking into account factors such as urban morphostructure, microclimatic conditions, existing green infrastructure, and social activities. The selected plant species have a proven potential for maximum pollutant capture.

In Burgas, the project will cover 17.23 hectares, while in Pleven, 8.5 hectares of urban environment will be transformed. The expected effect is significant – nearly 200,000 residents will directly feel the improvement in the ecological situation.

In addition to environmental benefits, the projects aim to increase public awareness. Activities are planned for active involvement of local communities in initiatives related to the conservation and maintenance of new green spaces.

The implementation of the two projects will be carried out under the procedure "Green Measures in Urban Environment" within the Priority "Air". The planned implementation period is 36 months, which ensures sustainable and long-term environmental results.
