Microsoft loses lawsuit over blocked account

A curious legal case in Brazil calls into question the practices of tech giants regarding user account management. An Xbox user managed to sue Microsoft after the company permanently blocked his account due to a hacker attack, instead of assisting him in recovering it.

The court ruled that the company has no right to unilaterally deprive customers of purchased digital content due to security breaches.

What happened?

The user, known on Reddit as Ordo_Liberal, lost access to his account after Microsoft detected unauthorized login activity. Instead of providing help, the company suggested creating a new account, which would mean losing the entire digital library built up over years.

The court decision:

  • Restoration of account access within 15 days.
  • A fine of 150 reals for each day of delay in case of non-compliance.
  • Compensation of 2000 reals for the inconvenience caused.

Why is this important?

This case affects all of us. When we invest thousands of levs in electronic libraries of games and applications, we are actually acquiring a right to use, which companies often restrict.
