Ukraine and Poland will deepen their strategic cooperation in the field of defense. The main focuses include strengthening air defense (AD), developing unmanned systems, and modernizing combat aviation. This became clear after a conversation between Ukrainian and Polish representatives.
Strategic Partnership and Logistical Role: Poland is a key strategic partner for Ukraine, playing a crucial logistical role, through whose territory about 90% of international aid to Ukraine passes.
Joint Projects and European Mechanisms: Joint defense projects and the use of European security mechanisms were discussed. Ukraine thanked Poland for its participation in the PURL initiative and for its readiness to work on drone development projects, a key element in modern combat operations.
JATEC and NATO Standards: The role of the NATO-Ukraine Joint Center JATEC in Poland was highlighted, which serves as a platform for analyzing combat experience, exchanging knowledge, and implementing NATO standards, having strategic importance for the transformation of the armed forces.
Strengthening "Small" Air Defense: Special attention was paid to strengthening the so-called "small" air defense, designed to counter drones and low-flying targets. Polish technologies are already an important part of the Ukrainian "small" AD. Plans are underway to expand radar coverage for early detection of threats, including "Shahed" type drones.
Aviation and MiG-29s: The topic of providing MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine was discussed. Poland has already provided such aircraft in 2023, and now the two countries are planning joint work on their modernization in order to increase combat effectiveness and expand the capabilities to hit enemy targets.
Exchange of Experience and Technologies: Ukraine will share its own developments and practical experience gained in the course of the war, especially in the field of countering Iranian "Shahed" drones. Data from the battlefield and experience can be useful for increasing the capabilities of the Polish armed forces.
