Transport Breakthrough: Bulgaria and North Macedonia Accelerate Railway Connectivity

The two countries made significant progress in constructing a cross-border railway tunnel, emphasizing the strategic importance of Corridor 8 for regional economic development.

During the Global Transport Connectivity Forum 2025 in Istanbul, Bulgarian Deputy Prime Minister Grozdan Karadjov and his Macedonian counterpart Alexander Nikoloski held key negotiations regarding the modernization of transport infrastructure between the two countries.

The main focus of the meeting was the need to develop European transport corridors, with particular attention paid to Railway and Road Corridor 8. The representatives emphasized the potential of this project as a catalyst for economic convergence and facilitation of trade relations.

Karadjov shared specific details about progress on the Bulgarian section. By the end of July, a public procurement is expected to be announced for the construction of the last 2.4 km of the railway line between Gyueshevo and "Deve bair". Financing of 69 million euros is guaranteed under the Transport Connectivity Program 2021-2027, with the goal of a Bulgarian train reaching the border crossing by the end of 2028.

Bulgaria's investments in modernizing the railway connection are expected to exceed 1.5 billion euros. The Deputy Prime Minister emphasized that this project is not just an infrastructure commitment arising from NATO membership and the Good Neighborliness Treaty, but also a symbol of friendship between the two countries.

As a result of the constructive dialogue, Karadjov and Nikolovski agreed to hold an expert meeting to coordinate the text of the agreement for building the cross-border railway tunnel. In parallel, both sides will send representatives to the European Commission meeting dedicated to Corridor 8 in July.

The agreements reached demonstrate the growing political will to deepen transport cooperation between Bulgaria and the Republic of North Macedonia.
