One person died and 24 were hurt when Russia hit Kyiv with drones on September 28, ArmiyaInform reports. Of the wounded, three are children; six people, two of them children, remain in city hospitals, according to figures as of 9pm.
The attacks went on all day, following an air raid that started overnight. Russia struck the presidium building of the National Academy of Sciences, the Dobrobut medical center, the Darnitsa pharmaceutical plant and several petrol stations.
The three-story presidium building of the National Academy of Sciences in central Kyiv was partly destroyed when it was hit around noon. A woman died and six people were hurt there; firefighters pulled two people from the third floor. Witnesses posted videos showing people climbing out of windows as the building burned. Several cars nearby caught fire, and heavy machinery is now on site clearing the rubble, Ukraine's State Emergency Service says.
The woman who died worked as an assistant to Volodymyr Horbulin, former secretary of Ukraine's National Security and Defence Council. Horbulin himself was slightly hurt by broken glass and is now at home.
"This is Russian terror. Terror against peaceful people. Terror against Ukrainian science, education and culture, against everything Russia has tried to destroy in Ukraine for years," the Academy of Sciences said.
The Dobrobut medical center in the city center was hit twice in one day, the network says. Fire broke out on the upper floors, home to the Dobrobut Academy, and on the ground floors, where the clinic operates. A blast wave from the inner courtyard blew out windows from the first to the third floor and damaged medical equipment. Seven people were hurt, six of them staff. Several were taken to the network's own emergency units, where rescue work has now finished.
The Darnitsa plant, Ukraine's biggest drugmaker, was hit again. No one was hurt, and the company gave no details on the damage. Kateryna Zahoriy, from the plant's strategic council, asked people not to post photos or videos of the damage, so Russia cannot see how much harm the strikes have done.
In the morning, a drone damaged an OKKO petrol station in Kyiv's Obolon district, the company confirmed. Staff stopped work and went to a shelter. In Holosiivskyi district, a drone hit a café next to an Ukrnafta petrol station; the station itself was likely the real target.
The overnight attack set off fires in four districts of the capital, hurting four people and damaging office buildings, a private two-story house and an apartment block.
Since morning, Russia has fired 124 attack drones, 86 of them decoys, Ukraine's air force says. Ukrainian forces shot down 86 of them, 49 of them decoys, with the main strike aimed at Kyiv and the surrounding region.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said pressure on Russia must become total, and that supporting Ukraine means supporting people's lives. "Russia must answer for all of this and feel real consequences," he said.
