Repair of the Danube Bridge near Ruse: The second phase has begun

The long-awaited major repair of the Danube Bridge near Ruse continues in full swing, entering its next key phase. After construction and installation work on one lane was successfully completed, construction teams turned their attention to the 320-meter section in the direction of Romania to renew its overall structure and functionality.

Start of the actual work

On September 5, to the sounds of construction equipment and with a strong presence of workers, the dismantling of the pedestrian railing and some of the old lighting poles began. This step marks the beginning of the actual repair work, after traffic was completely redirected to the newly renovated lane towards Bulgaria. The visible condition of the old section, which for decades has borne the weight of international traffic, showed the need for urgent intervention.

After careful preparation of the construction site, which included cleaning and treatment of compromised surfaces, the teams proceeded to the next, larger stages. The existing drainage system will be dismantled, as well as the complete destruction of the compromised pavements – from the asphalt concrete to the waterproofing, protective concrete, and sidewalk. These activities are of critical importance to ensure the longevity and safety of the facility.

The "Road Infrastructure Agency" (RIA) reminds that the repair is being carried out in stages, and work on the site continues daily. The traffic organization is arranged to provide two-way passage for vehicles only in the lane that is not subject to repair work. This, in turn, requires extreme discipline from drivers.

The agency also makes a special appeal to drivers, urging them to observe the introduced speed limit of 20 km/h. It is emphasized that vehicles that do not conform to the permissible parameters for movement on the bridge, especially oversized ones, pose a serious risk. They can damage the already repaired section, which would lead to unforeseen delays and additional costs.
