The government is taking steps to expand hail protection in Northern Bulgaria through the construction of new missile platforms. It is planned to build 21 new platforms in Pleven region, 4 in Lovech region and 3 in Veliko Tarnovo region, which will provide protection for over 230,000 hectares of agricultural land.
At the moment, over 2 million hectares in the strongly hail-affected regions of Vidin, Montana, Vratsa, Pleven, Pazardzhik, Plovdiv, Stara Zagora, Sliven and Haskovo are protected by missile capabilities. The construction of a new command center in Pleven region and 28 missile platforms connected to it was discussed at a meeting between the Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Ivan Kapitanov, representatives of the local authorities, the Executive Agency "Hail Suppression" (IABG) and local agricultural producers.
According to Deputy Minister Kapitanov, the choice of Pleven region for the expansion of hail protection was made after analysis and coordination with other institutions, taking into account factors such as air traffic. Experts from IABG presented an analysis of the current situation, showing an increase in the intensity and frequency of hail-bearing clouds, especially in Southern Bulgaria.
Deputy Minister Kapitanov informed that in addition to the new platforms in Northern Bulgaria, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food plans to strengthen the existing protection with 25 additional missile platforms. Protection with ground-based generators will also be built in previously unprotected areas. He emphasized that in the face of climate change, the protection of agricultural producers and food security is of crucial importance.
According to IABG data, from the beginning of the active hail protection season on April 15 to the present, 98 impacts have been made in the country, 403 hail-bearing clouds have been treated, and a total of 7,159 missiles have been fired, of which 4,263 in Southern Bulgaria and 2,896 in Northern Bulgaria.
