Expansion of the _q_Chiren_ Gas Storage Facility: The First Phase Has Been Successfully Completed

Following a key priority for the energy security of Bulgaria and the region, the first phase of the ambitious project to expand the Chiren gas storage facility has been successfully completed. This was announced during a parliamentary blitz control, where Minister of Energy Zhecho Stankov confirmed the completion of the phase in response to a question asked by a Member of Parliament from the Velichie political party, Krasimira Petkova Ninova-Katincharova.

The project, which is of strategic importance not only for the country but also for the entire Southeast European region, aims to double the capacity of the storage facility. The ultimate goal is for it to reach an impressive volume of 1 billion cubic meters of gas, compared to the current 550 million. The expansion is planned in three separate phases – one above-ground and two underground, with the now-completed stage being the above-ground part.

What does the first phase include?

The completed phase includes the installation of modern gas compressors, which significantly increase the gas injection capacity. According to Minister Stankov, this technical improvement has already increased the total capacity of the storage facility by about 20%. With the new compressors put into operation, market participants, including the state-owned company Bulgargaz, can now store up to 650 million cubic meters of gas. This figure represents an increase of 100 million cubic meters compared to the previous capabilities of the facility.

The Minister of Energy emphasized that the main function of the gas storage facility is to ensure supply stability and mitigate price fluctuations. He explained that during the summer season, when natural gas prices are traditionally lower, significant quantities are stored in Chiren, which can subsequently be used to provide more affordable prices for household and non-household consumers during the colder winter months.

The Chiren expansion project is recognized as being of pan-European importance and is considered a key element in the strategy for diversification and energy security of both Bulgaria and neighboring countries. The successful completion of the first phase marks an important step toward strengthening energy independence in the region, while also providing greater flexibility and security for traders and end-users.
