Renovation of the Gynecological Department at UMBAL Burgas

The Gynecological Department of UMBAL Burgas is undergoing a major renovation, transforming into a modern center for women"s health care.

Renovation works, including partial refurbishment of the premises, are already underway, and full re-equipment is planned, especially for the high-risk pregnancy monitoring unit.

The atmosphere in the department is filled with anticipation and hope for a better future. Changes in infrastructure are noticeable, but the team strives for a more comprehensive upgrading of the conditions for patients.

New Head and Innovative Approach

Since the beginning of June 2024, the department has been headed by Dr. Zlatko Kirovakov, MD, an obstetrician-gynecologist with extensive clinical and teaching experience.

His dissertation, dedicated to the prevention of reproductive failures and postnatal complications in women with genetically determined thrombophilia, based on an analysis of nearly 500 cases, proposes an innovative therapeutic algorithm.

Dr. Kirovakov introduces a scientifically-based approach to clinical practice, emphasizing the screening and prevention of serious complications such as preeclampsia, premature birth, and gestational diabetes.

This new approach is key to improving care for mothers and their babies.

80 Years of Tradition and Modern Technologies

The Gynecological Department boasts over 80 years of history and tradition, preserving a rich legacy from some of the most respected names in Bulgarian gynecology.

Today, this tradition is combined with modern approaches, equipment upgrades, and continuous care for women"s health.

The department is the only one in Southeastern Bulgaria with a specialized sector for pathological and high-risk pregnancies, making it a key center for patients from the entire region.

Increasingly, doctors from other medical institutions refer their patients to UMBAL Burgas, attracted by the combination of long-standing experience, modern equipment, and the proximity of a highly qualified neonatal department, which is of paramount importance in premature births.

Expansion of Services

Soon, the department will perform fetal morphology and screening for chromosomal abnormalities, including early diagnosis as early as 11-13 gestational weeks.

This allows for early detection of severe structural abnormalities in the fetus, as well as assessment of the risk of preeclampsia and other complications, where timely intervention is crucial for a favorable outcome.

Dr. Stefani Markova, who is leaving for specialization in fetal medicine at the Institute of Fetal Medicine at King"s College London, will be a key figure in this process.

Support and Philanthropy

The management of UMBAL Burgas actively supports the new initiatives, investing in improving living conditions and providing modern medical equipment.

The training of specialists, medical students, and future midwives transforms the department into an academic center, further proving its revival.

Trust in the team has inspired a charitable initiative by the "I Want a Baby_q_ foundation and like-minded individuals.

Two fetal monitors, a twin transducer, and bed linen have already been provided to the department, and new gynecological chairs are expected to be delivered.

This further strengthens the commitment to providing the highest quality of care for patients.
