On 29 April 2026, the renovated runway at "Burgas" Airport welcomed the first aircraft of the season. This is the first real landing after the large‑scale refurbishment worth nearly 60 million euro, launched six months ago and officially completed with an opening ceremony. In this way, the airport of the seaside city effectively kicks off the summer traffic and sends a clear signal to tour operators, airlines and tourists that it is fully ready for an intensive season.
Official start: speeches, media and a full hall
The ceremony began in the terminal building with official statements by representatives of the concessionaire "Fraport Twin Star Airport Management" AD, as well as local and national authorities. Journalists from national and regional media, members of the diplomatic corps and international partners of the airport were present in the hall. The officials outlined the significance of the project both for the region and for the national transport and tourism infrastructure.
"This is an investment that not only restores a runway – it guarantees Bulgaria’s air link to key markets for the next 20 years," one of the official guests underlined. After the statements there was a short Q&A session with the media, focusing on the technical parameters of the runway, the timeline for the restoration of flights and expectations for the summer season.
Out to the runway: blessing and welcoming the first aircraft
After the protocol part, the delegation headed to the runway, which was the focus of the event.
On the horizon, the first aircraft from Sofia appeared – the flight that officially "opens" the new runway for real operations. The sound of the landing gear touching the new surface was greeted with applause from the official guests and the airport staff. "This first landing is much more than a technical test – it is proof that the investment made is working to the benefit of passengers and airlines," the airport management commented.
On site, a clergyman performed a blessing service and consecrated the renovated facility, the airport teams and the upcoming flight season. The blessing added extra symbolism to the moment – the runway was not only technically accepted, but also "wished" for safe operation.
In the presence of guests and media, a symbolic ribbon was cut, officially declaring the renovated runway open. The gesture summed up six months of construction works, numerous tests and technical inspections.
The refurbishment carried out by "Fraport Twin Star Airport Management" AD has been described as crucial for at least the next two decades. The project aims to ensure technical safety and operational readiness for a minimum of 20 years ahead. Special asphalt mixtures, providing long‑term durability under intensive use and varying weather conditions, were used to renew the pavement, and the drainage system was completely replaced.
"Ready for giants": preserved parameters and new drainage
Despite the large‑scale work, all key technical parameters of the runway have been preserved. This means that "Burgas" Airport can continue to handle the largest commercial aircraft in the world – a decisive factor for charter programmes from major markets such as the United Kingdom, Germany and Poland, where tour operators often use wide‑body aircraft for mass summer traffic.
The fully renewed drainage system reduces the risk of water accumulation on the runway during heavy rainfall and increases safety during landings and take‑offs in poor weather conditions. Combined with the modern pavement, this means fewer restrictions and fewer flights cancelled because of a "wet runway" – a critical factor in the spring months and during sudden storms.
Economic significance: the "gateway to the sea" wide open again
The landing of the first aircraft on 29 April also has a clear economic dimension. "Burgas" Airport is a major entry point for tourists heading to the Southern Black Sea coast and an important factor for employment in the region. The active summer season is expected to start as early as next week, when the first pre‑scheduled flights from Poland and the United Kingdom – markets that traditionally send hundreds of thousands of tourists every year – are due to arrive.
"The restoration of regular traffic after a refurbishment of this scale is a signal not only to airlines, but also to the local business – hotels, restaurants, transport companies," the concessionaire notes. According to them, a well‑maintained runway is a critical precondition for Burgas to remain competitive compared to other Black Sea destinations in the region.
Ending with a festive reception
After the official part on the runway, the guests returned to the terminal, where a festive reception was organised in the airport’s VIP lounge area. In an informal setting, representatives of the authorities, the airport management, diplomatic guests and partners had the opportunity to discuss the prospects for "Burgas" Airport after the refurbishment.

Thus, the day, which began with protocol speeches and ended with a first landing on the new surface, a ribbon‑cutting and a toast to success, clearly conveyed the organisers’ message: the renovated runway is not just an infrastructure project, but a new stage for Burgas – with more flights, higher expectations and stronger connections to the world.
