Young director Dimitris Georgiev will complete the official tour of his short film "What Remains" with a gala premiere in Burgас on June 1. The premiere in Burgас is supported by the Municipality of Burgас, and the event will be marked by the exclusive presence of Oscar-nominated Maria Bakalova, who is returning to her hometown to present the film in person to the Burgас audience. On the same day, June 1, the film will also be available to viewers across the country through the MAX platform, which will give a wider audience the opportunity to experience this personal and socially significant story.
The film "What Remains" by director Dimitris Georgiev, featuring Maria Bakalova, Zahari Baharov, Elena Telbis, Yan Lozov, and Simeon Georgiev, has become a true triumph of short film, generating unprecedented public interest and masterfully shedding light on some of the most pressing issues of Bulgarian reality. The plot follows the young Yan, who, after the death of his sister in an accident, begins to unravel the threads of family silence, permeated with guilt, shame, and injustice. The film not only tells a personal story, but also offers a critical look at the present and the lagging institutions.
Director Dimitris Georgiev draws inspiration from a personal tragedy - the loss of his father in an accident - and, together with screenwriter Mariy Rosen, creates a powerful emotional narrative with a message. The production is realized by No Blink Pictures, New European Wave Entertainment, and Five Oceans, with the support of the National Film Center, the Municipality of Stara Zagora, the Municipality of Sofia, the Municipality of Burgас, and the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and the list of producers includes the names of Aleksandar Aleksiev, Borislav Borislavov, Nikolay Stoichkov, Teodora Mladenova, Yulian Kostov, and Maria Bakalova.
"What Remains" does not just tell a story. It is an invitation to a conversation - about the loss we cannot see, about the responsibility that often no one takes, but also about the hope that the strength of the spirit will be able to restore faith in the future. And if what remains is silence - isn't it time we finally break it?
Dimitris Georgiev graduated in "Film and Television Directing" at NATFIZ in 2021. Even as a student, he made an impression with his short films "The Last 2 Days", "That Summer in Winter", and "Together Without You", which were selected at numerous international festivals. In 2021, together with Mariy Rosen, they filmed their feature film debut "Dad", which will have its premiere this year in the "New Bulgarian Feature Film" program within the 29th "Sofia Film Fest". Dimitris Georgiev became part of the directors' selection in the Talents Sarajevo program, and from 2025 he is a member of the European Film Academy.
