The Minister of Energy Zhecho Stankov emphasized that the efforts for decarbonization of the Maritsa-East complex are of key importance for its sustainable development and ensuring the competitiveness of the Bulgarian economy. The government has signed an agreement with the European Investment Bank (EIB) to provide advisory assistance to facilitate the process of greening this strategic energy facility.
According to the EIB Vice-President Kyriakos Kakouris, promoting economic and social cohesion is at the core of the bank's mission, which is ready to support the just transition of the Bulgarian regions affected by the reduction of carbon-intensive industries. EIB experts will work together with the Ministry of Energy to ensure the timely development of priority renewable energy projects that will reduce the energy costs of the complex.
The signed agreement is the next stage of the cooperation between the Ministry of Energy and the EIB in the process of decarbonization. The technical assistance provided by the bank so far has played a key role in identifying priority areas for intervention, which can stimulate Bulgaria's decarbonization program.
Minister Stankov emphasized that the cooperation with the EIB will ensure the sustainable long-term operation of the Maritsa-East complex in line with the challenges of the green future. EIB services will also support and strengthen the administrative capacity of the Ministry of Energy to manage complex projects and expand EU financing.
