High-ranking government representatives undertook large-scale coordination actions to overcome challenges related to water resource distribution in the country. A major expert meeting was held at the agricultural ministry's headquarters with the participation of leading government officials and strategic company managers.
The forum was attended by Dr. Georgi Takhov - Minister of Agriculture, Manol Genov - Minister of Environment, Zhecko Stankov - Minister of Energy, together with management staff from "Irrigation Systems", "ESO" and "NEK". The discussion was a direct continuation of preliminary consultations with Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov.
The main goal of the meeting was to achieve a precise balance between different water quantity needs - for agricultural irrigation, domestic needs, and the electricity system. Among the key objects discussed were the Batak, Pyasachnik, and Belmeken dams.
"We are working extremely purposefully and constructively to distribute available water resources as efficiently as possible," emphasized Minister Takhov. As an immediate measure, an urgent inspection of the regional branches of "Irrigation Systems" EAD was ordered.
The inspection covers a detailed assessment of water quantities in the dams, the technical condition of irrigation and drainage channels, as well as the entire hydrotechnical infrastructure. Investments of 1.5 billion leva are planned for the next four-year period for a complete system upgrade.
The Ministry of Agriculture, in its capacity as the main shareholder, will exercise strict control over the expenditure of funds. During the meeting, a consensus was reached regarding water quantities for irrigation during the current month of July.
