On June 18, 2025, Minister Zecho Stankov participated in the official opening ceremony of the Longship project in Norway. The project represents the world's first carbon capture facility, located at the Heidelberg Materials plant in the city of Brevik.
During his two-day working visit to Norway, Minister Stankov emphasized Bulgaria's commitment to the European decarbonization agenda. "This project is a huge step for Norway, for Europe, and for the world. I believe that Norwegian know-how will allow us to find the best solutions for our regions as well. Especially in areas where industry is a key employer, and the technologies are applicable," the minister noted.
The event marks the start of the transportation of captured CO₂ from the Brevik plant to the Northern Lights facilities - "Northern Lights" (part of the Longship program), which lays the foundation for a comprehensive carbon value chain with the potential to inspire the overall efforts for the decarbonization of European industry. Participants visited the industrial facility to get a close-up look at the technological solutions that are ushering in a new era in sustainable industry.
Minister Stankov highlighted Bulgaria's actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, placing a strong emphasis on the social dimension of the energy transition.
