At an official press conference, a large-scale infrastructure project was presented, aimed at improving the national emergency notification system. The initiative, launched on July 1, 2025, provides for a significant expansion of communication capabilities for informing Bulgarian citizens during emergency situations.
Georgi Borisov, Head of the "Communication and Information Systems" Directorate, emphasized the strategic importance of the project. On his behalf, it was announced that the new system will provide a higher degree of protection and prevention for the population in 16 additional areas and 61 municipal centers with available communication coverage.
The history of the national early warning system dates back to 2008, when it was initially introduced in 11 provincial cities. Currently, sirens operate in 11 regional centers and four regional control nodes. The new project aims to significantly expand the coverage by planning the installation of 903 modern acoustic sirens.
During the expected 36-month implementation period, the project will ensure notification of approximately 75% of the national population. Among the official guests at the presentation were high-ranking experts from the European Commission, including Marina Filcheva and Simona Kerezova, as well as the Deputy Director of the Main Directorate "Fire Safety and Population Protection" Senior Commissioner Lyubomir Barov.
The large-scale initiative has a total value of 75,087,050.00 leva and is funded by the "Environment" Program 2021-2027, with the support of the European Regional Development Fund and the Cohesion Fund. 78 specialists from various areas of the country, including representatives from Vratsa, Sliven, Dobrich, and other regional centers, actively participated in the online presentation.
The project demonstrates a serious commitment to improving national security and emergency response readiness while building upon the existing communication infrastructure.
