Burgas Airport: Reconstruction for 50 million euros, runway to be renovated

Burgas Airport is preparing for a significant change that will transform air traffic in the region. BNR reported that the airport will be closed for a period of six months to carry out a large-scale reconstruction and replacement of the runway. An official ceremony will mark the beginning of the construction activities, which are expected to be among the largest infrastructure projects in the area.

The investment in this project amounts to an impressive 50 million euros. The concessionaire of the marine station - the German consortium "Fraport Twin Star Airport Management" - is responsible for the implementation of this ambitious initiative.

Today is chosen as the symbolic start of the construction work, as it marks 19 years since the beginning of the airport concession. This coincidence adds additional significance to the upcoming changes.

The executive director of the airport, Vasil Atanasov, shared details about the planned activities. "The old runway was built 46 years ago. It has a concrete surface and is the longest on the Balkan Peninsula. New modern technology will be used now to replace the old surface," he explained. This underlines the need for modernization and ensuring higher standards of safety and efficiency.

The first flights on the new runway are expected to take place on May 1, 2026. The preparation for this moment has taken considerable time and effort. The reconstruction project was developed by specialists with international experience for a full five years, guaranteeing high quality and compliance with the latest standards. In order to realize the project, 150 workers are engaged in the construction activities.
