Youth and sports minister Encho Keryazov has praised the national hockey team for players with intellectual disabilities after they finished fifth at the Para Hockey World Cup in Belgium and the Netherlands.

The Bulgarians played several strong matches against well-established rivals. They won five games in the group stage and came third in Group B. For fifth place, they took on hosts the Netherlands at the Wagener Stadium in Amsterdam and won 5-2.

Team captain Angel Hilendarov finished the tournament as top scorer with 31 goals. He was also shortlisted for best player of the World Cup.

"Thank you for the success you keep achieving and for the way you represent Bulgaria. Behind these results lie a lot of hard work, persistence and dedication. Thanks also go to the coaches and the whole team who work with you every day and help you grow your abilities," Keryazov said.

He said equal access to sport matters, and so does the chance for everyone to develop their skills.

"Sport has the power to bring people together, build confidence and help people show the best of themselves. Your success proves that. What you've achieved makes you an example and an inspiration. I wish you more wins and a strong showing in your upcoming competitions," the minister added.

Professor Antonio Antonov, executive director of the Bulgarian Hockey Federation, thanked the youth and sports ministry for its support, saying it plays a key part in getting Bulgarian athletes ready for international tournaments.

Keryazov told the athletes and federation leaders the state will keep backing the sport's growth.

"Our main goal is to give Bulgarian athletes the conditions to reach their full potential and the chance to train properly and compete in major international events," the minister said.
