Traffic Police to Fine for Summer Tires: Winter Tires Mandatory

From today, traffic police officers across the country will begin to impose fines on all drivers caught driving their vehicles with tires unsuitable for the winter season. The legislation provides for strict safety measures, as from November 15th to March 1st, all vehicles must be equipped with winter tires. Alternatively, drivers can choose tires with a tread depth of not less than or equal to 4 mm.

The Road Traffic Act (RTA) allows the use of all-season tires, and even summer tires, provided that they meet the requirement for minimum tread depth. However, experts have been making categorical recommendations for the use of winter tires during the cold months for years, emphasizing their key role in ensuring a higher degree of road safety in conditions of low temperatures, snow, and ice.

Tension is felt on the streets since the beginning of November, when the traditional operation "Winter" began. Its main goal is to raise awareness and responsibility of drivers regarding the preparation of vehicles for the upcoming winter season. Today, with the entry into force of new control measures, traffic police officers will be even more persistent and will monitor the condition of vehicles with regard to winter equipment. The situation on the roads shows that many drivers are still not prepared for the challenges of the winter season.
