Major fire in Halkidiki: Tourists evacuated by sea in Siviri and Fourka

Critical forest fire situation in Halkidiki

A large forest fire has broken out in the area of the resort village of Siviri in Halkidiki, Greece. The fire forced authorities to carry out an emergency evacuation of the local population and tourists, with sea evacuations being necessary in some areas. An evacuation has also been announced for the residents of the nearby village of Fourka.

Strong winds are further fanning the flames and hindering the work of firefighting crews.

Large-scale rescue operation

Impressive forces have been deployed to combat the blaze:

• 142 firefighters on the ground;
• 8 specialized aircraft;
• 7 helicopters.

At the moment, the causes of the incident remain unclear. The main working theory is that strong wind gusts knocked down an electricity pole, and a spark ignited the fire.

Restrictions introduced

Authorities are imposing strict temporary restrictions on access to the forested areas of Kassandra and Sithonia. The ban will be in effect from 08:00 to 20:00 starting tomorrow.

The Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that, at this time, there have been no reports of injured or distressed Bulgarian citizens. The Consulate General of the Republic of Bulgaria in Thessaloniki is monitoring the situation and is prepared to provide assistance if necessary.
