German Chancellor Friedrich Merz will arrive in the United States on May 6 for his first official meeting with US President Donald Trump. This will be Merz's first visit to America since taking office a month ago.
According to the spokesman of the German government Steffen Seibert, the main topics of the discussions at the White House will be the Russian war against Ukraine, the situation in the Middle East, and bilateral trade policy. So far, Merz has visited France, Poland, Northern Europe, and Ukraine, but has not crossed the Atlantic Ocean, despite the expressed desire to improve relations with the Trump administration.
US-German relations remain tense due to trade imbalances, differences over support for Ukraine, and German domestic policy, including the attitude towards the far-right party "Alternative for Germany". Allies of Trump, such as Secretary of State Marco Rubio, sharply criticize Berlin's policy, but Merz rejects the accusations and insists on non-interference.
