On June 24, 2025, Energy Minister Zhecho Stankov participated in a forum dedicated to the role of Central and Eastern Europe in global supply chains of strategic resources. Stankov emphasized that rare earth elements are crucial for new technologies, such as smartphones, electric vehicles, and wind turbines, and are the backbone of sustainable energy development.
Bulgaria has a modern regulatory framework, a National Geological Fund with information on mining surveys over the past 100 years, as well as a rich industrial history in this sector. This provides a secure foundation for the country to become not only a consumer, but also an active participant in the supply chains of rare earth elements, Minister Stankov stated.
Deputy Energy Minister Krasimir Nenov, also participating in the forum, pointed out that Bulgaria's upcoming accession to the Eurozone and the OECD will provide additional security for investors. He also emphasized the social and environmental aspects of exploration and extraction as a key factor for their success.
Minister Stankov outlined the ambition of the Ministry of Energy to accelerate the administrative procedures related to the search, exploration, and concession of extraction areas. "Today, we have the opportunity to further develop and build new capacity for the country, not just as a source of resources, but also as a driver of innovation and sustainable development," he stressed.
Bulgaria's participation in global supply chains of strategic resources is crucial for achieving energy security and sustainability. By accelerating administrative procedures, attracting investors, and strengthening international cooperation, the government aims to turn the country into an active player in this important sector.
