The public nature of SpaceX's new spacecraft tests has drawn significant attention to the company's failures, but Elon Musk emphasizes that this is the inevitable fate of pioneers in the space industry. According to the preliminary investigation, the reason for the explosion of the Starship prototype is likely due to a failure of a high-pressure vessel in the cargo compartment of the spacecraft.
Musk explains that this vessel must be filled with high-pressure nitrogen to prevent the structure from collapsing when the fuel is consumed. But during the latest tests, the vessel was destroyed at a pressure lower than the allowable. If this hypothesis is confirmed, this would be the first time that such a problem has manifested in the current configuration of the Starship.
On the other hand, Musk emphasizes that the problem can be relatively easily resolved, which theoretically will allow SpaceX to quickly prepare a new prototype for further testing. It is recalled that the Super Heavy booster rocket was not used during the incident and was not damaged. As for the damaged ground infrastructure, SpaceX has a main launch pad from which it can resume tests during the repair work.
