The team of the Regional Laboratory - Vrana at the Executive Environment Agency has reacted quickly to three signals of water pollution received by the Black Sea Basin Directorate within 10 days. The checks were carried out immediately after receiving the signals in cooperation with experts from the basin directorate and the Regional Inspectorate of Environment and Water - Varna.
The first check was carried out in the area of "Bulyard Shipbuilding Industry" EAD after a signal for oil stains on the surface of the Old Channel connecting the Varna Lake with the Black Sea. Opalescence and an oil film were found on the water surface in the area of the discharge pipe of the storm sewer on the territory of the enterprise.
The second check was made in the area between the third and fourth breakwaters on a signal for pollution of the sea waters with oil products. During the inspection, no pollution was found in this area, but between the third and second breakwaters, as well as after the first breakwater, powdery substances were observed in wide stripes on the sea surface with slight opalescence and brownish-yellow coloration of unknown origin.
The third check was on a signal for the discharge of black (waste) water with a bad odor from a ship at the "Karantinata" fishing port, Asparuhovo district. The analysis of the sea water sample shows an exceedance of the maximum permissible concentration in terms of ammonium nitrogen, but not in the other parameters studied.
During all inspections, water samples were taken, which were analyzed for the content of petroleum products, polychlorinated biphenyls and volatile organic compounds. The results show that all indicators are below the quantification limit of the method. The results of the tests carried out have been sent to the Black Sea Basin Directorate for action within their competence.
