Russian strikes near the former Chernobyl nuclear power plant have caused an emergency situation. The plant is without electricity, which affects the protective structure. Zelensky accuses Russia of a deliberate attack and creating a nuclear threat.

An emergency situation is unfolding at the former Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant after Russian strikes affected the energy infrastructure near the site, located in the Kyiv region. According to information published by Ukrinform, the plant is currently without electricity. This alarming news was confirmed by the Ministry of Energy through a Facebook post.

According to the ministry's statement, the lack of electricity supply has also affected a key part of the plant's facilities - the new safe confinement structure. This structure, vital for the isolation of the destroyed Fourth power unit and the prevention of the release of radioactive materials into the environment, was left without electricity after the attack.

At the scene of the event, specialists are working hard to restore the power supply. Obviously, the task is urgent, given the potential risks that prolonged lack of electricity could cause.

Earlier, the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine reported Russian strikes against energy infrastructure in the Kyiv region. As a result of the attacks using unmanned aerial vehicles, residents of the Kyiv and Chernihiv regions have been left without electricity. Repair teams have been deployed to the scene of the damage to eliminate the consequences.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy did not remain indifferent to these events. According to information released by Reuters and cited by BTA, Zelenskyy defined the attack on the Chernobyl NPP as deliberate. He specified that the attack was carried out using 20 drones, and the statement was published in the "Telegram" application.

In addition to the situation at "Chernobyl", Zelenskyy drew attention to the ongoing problems at the Zaporizhzhia NPP. He stated that Russia is not taking any action to restore the external power supply to the plant, which has been disconnected from the external power transmission grid for eight days.

The President of Ukraine expressed serious concerns about Russia's actions, accusing Moscow of deliberately creating a threat of nuclear accidents. He stressed that this is happening, taking advantage of, according to him, the "soft position" of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and its director.

The IAEA is headed by Rafael Grossi, who earlier today stated that the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which is under Russian occupation, does not pose an "immediate danger", while functioning thanks to "backup diesel generators".
