Burgas University Welcomes International Medical Students

For the third consecutive year, the doors of Burgas State University (BSU) "Prof. Dr. Asen Zlatarov" opened for international students who have chosen to study "Medicine" in the seaside city. The solemn ceremony of welcoming them, which has become a tradition, coincided with the celebration of 62 years since the establishment of the university, the university announced. The atmosphere in front of the building of the educational institution was filled with joy and anticipation, as students arriving from different parts of the world gathered for their special day.

The young people who are joining BSU this year come from a total of 21 countries. The geography of their origin covers Asia and Africa, North America and Europe, and there are also representatives from island countries, the university management specified. This diversity of cultures and nationalities is in itself a testament to the international prestige of the educational institution and the attractiveness of the medicine program.

The rector of the university, Prof. Dr. Sotir Sotirov, delivered a welcoming speech, in which he emphasized the importance of the upcoming training. "The preparation you will receive is of extremely high quality and will give you a start for your future professional development", he assured. His words were filled with hope and gratitude to the newly arrived students. "For us, you are ambassadors from all over the world, who come to us with a desire for knowledge and friendship", Prof. Sotirov noted. He did not fail to mention the possibility that some of them will stay in Bulgaria and put their acquired knowledge into practice, and those who will return to their homelands will spread the glory of the university and of Burgas.

A number of official guests attended the ceremony, including Mihail Nenov, Deputy Mayor for Education, Healthcare, Social Activities and Youth Policies at Burgas Municipality, Vesna Baltina, Deputy Mayor for Strategic Development and Ecology, Digitalization and Adaptation to Climate Change, and Mihail Hadjiyanev, Chairman of the Municipal Council - Burgas. Among the guests were also Dr. Georgi Pazderov, director of RZI - Burgas, the Consul General of the Republic of Turkey in Burgas Tolga Orkun, Prof. DSc. Ovanes Mekenyan, head of the Laboratory of Mathematical Chemistry, as well as two former rectors - Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nikolai Ralev and Prof. Dr. Hristo Bozov.

Mihail Nenov conveyed the greetings of the mayor of Burgas, Dimitar Nikolov. He recalled the thought of the anthropologist Margaret Mead that "a sign of civilization is not technical or scientific achievements, but the care for human health", and wished the young people success in mastering the noble profession.

Students from different courses also sent greetings to their colleagues. Among them were freshman Vladimir Simeonov from Luxembourg, sophomore Victor Kolev from Canada, and Mohamed Shah Zeb from Great Britain, a third-year student who was chosen as student of the year and is known for his active volunteer work. These young people, from different parts of the world, shared their experience and encouraged the newly arrived to dedicate themselves to the study of medicine. The holiday was complemented by a performance by the Bulgarian folk singer Zlatka Stavreva.

We remind you that a week ago it was announced an increase in the places for the specialty "Medicine" in BSU by 20. The rector Prof. Sotir Sotirov shared that the admission of foreign students usually continues even after the beginning of the school year, as their diplomas often arrive later. "We have students under the different regulations of the ministry - Bessarabian Bulgarians, Ukrainians, Macedonians. There, the admission is almost doubled", he specified.
