Burgas University: 1000+ Students, Increase in Admissions

Over a thousand students have been accepted to Burgas State University for the 2025/2026 academic year, announced the newly elected rector Prof. Dr. Sotir Sotirov after the official opening of the academic year.

This is practically a full record of the state order, and a significant number of students enrolled in paid education are added to them.

The rector"s optimism is supported by expectations for a further increase in the student population. "Another 20 places in the "Medicine" specialty should become available any moment with the new ministerial decree", said Prof. Sotirov, adding that this will lead to an increase of 60-70 students compared to last year.

"Unlike other universities in Bulgaria, where admissions are decreasing, ours is increasing", he emphasized, describing the situation as a great success for the university.

International Students

A captivating picture is also revealed regarding international students. Over 70 students from abroad have already enrolled in the "Medicine" specialty, and the enrollment process continues after the start of the academic year, as the receipt of diplomas from abroad is somewhat delayed. The university accepts students under various ministerial decrees, including Bessarabian Bulgarians, Ukrainians and Macedonians, with admissions in this category almost doubled.

"I hope this is due to the good name of the university not only in Bulgaria, but also abroad", the rector shared, expressing hope that this growth is an indicator of the high prestige of the university.

New Faculty of Pharmacy

The newly established Faculty of Pharmacy is awaiting accreditation of the specialty itself, which is key to accepting the first students.

"The faculty has already been established, but according to state requirements, we need to do another accreditation – of the specialty itself. This is expected next month. I hope the process will be successful and we can congratulate ourselves on the acceptance of the first pharmacy students", commented Prof. Sotirov, expressing optimism for the successful completion of the procedure.

Priority Specialties

Among the priorities of the new leadership are medicine, "with the huge number of applicants", computer science "in all its varieties", chemical technologies, chemistry and ecology, as well as pedagogical specialties.

Prof. Sotirov stated that attention will be paid both to the strongly developed specialties and to those that are not so popular.

"Engineering fields are not the easiest, but we have a good laboratory base, strong personnel potential and a high level of scientific activity. They also need to be supported to develop sustainably", the rector pointed out, highlighting the need for a balanced approach.

Branches

Regarding the branches in Kazanlak and Dobrich, meetings are planned with an expert group to assess the base and teaching staff in Dobrich.

"The entire leadership of the region has tried very hard. We expect a positive result from the accreditation", said Prof. Sotirov, expressing hope for successful accreditation.

Prof. Hristo Bozov

The rector noted that he convinced his predecessor, Prof. Hristo Bozov, to remain at the university as a lecturer.

"He intended to leave immediately after his term, but I think I managed to dissuade him. Prof. Bozov is a wonderful lecturer and specialist in his field – anesthesiology and resuscitation. Such specialists are rare and it will be of great benefit to us for him to continue working with our students", said Prof. Sotirov, emphasizing the importance of Prof. Bozov"s experience and expertise.
