BNB to Issue 2 Euro Coin for the Bulgarian Alphabet

The Bulgarian National Bank (BNB) plans to issue a commemorative 2 euro coin dedicated to "Bulgarian Alphabet" in the second half of 2026, according to the bank's coin program. This news represents an important aspect of the country's cultural policy, marking the significance of Bulgarian literacy in national identity.

In addition, the coin program for the coming year includes the editions of one gold, three silver, and one copper collector's coins. This demonstrates BNB's commitment to maintaining and developing the numismatic tradition, by offering valuable collector's items.

The gold coin, which is expected to be released in October, will have a face value of 100 euros and will be dedicated to St. Ivan Rilski, one of the most revered clerics in Bulgarian history. It is expected that this coin will generate great interest among collectors and will contribute to the popularization of the religious and cultural heritage of Bulgaria.

The silver coins, which will be released in January, April, and August, will mark important events and dates in the history of Bulgaria. The first of them will be dedicated to "125 years of electric trams in Bulgaria". The next will mark "150 years since the April Uprising", one of the most significant events in the struggle for liberation from Ottoman rule. The third silver coin will be dedicated to "Transfiguration Monastery", a valuable cultural monument. Each of these silver coins will have a face value of 10 euros.

The copper coin, which is planned for March, will have a denomination of 5 euros and will mark 150 years since the birth of Krastyo Sarafov, a prominent Bulgarian actor and theatrical figure. This is recognition of Sarafov's contribution to Bulgarian theatrical art and culture.

The upcoming coin issues reflect various aspects of Bulgarian history and culture, emphasizing their significance and contribution to the national heritage. /EU/
