On June 19, 2025, students and teachers from the "Little Bulgarian School" in Chicago were guests of the Municipality of Burgas. The group, consisting of 9- to 16-year-old students, accompanied by two teachers and the principal Zhivka Bubalova-Petrova, met with Mayor Dimitar Nikolov, who acquainted them with the history and culture of the city, as well as the duties and activities of the mayor. The students wanted to learn more about the mayor's work, the number of schools, kindergartens, and museums in Burgas.
The Bulgarian children from Chicago are on a summer language camp in Burgas from June 12 to 20, which is part of the program of the Ministry of Education and Science "Educational Routes" and at the invitation of the Municipality of Burgas on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the "Little Bulgarian School". During their stay in the homeland, the students and their leaders visited many sights in and around Burgas, including the Ethnographic Museum, the Petya Dubarova House-Museum, the KTK "Chengene Skele", the Museum of the Impossible, the Georgi Baev House-Museum, the island of St. Anastasia, the Center for Contemporary Art, the library, the Expo Center "Flora Burgas" and the open-air pool "Flora".
"Little Bulgarian School" in Chicago is the largest Bulgarian school outside the country, with over 650 students. It was registered in 2010 as a non-profit organization that founds and manages Bulgarian schools abroad. In 2014, the school received accreditation from the ISBE (Illinois State Board of Education) for the recognition of the Bulgarian language as a credit in American high schools. This year, the "Little Bulgarian School" celebrates its 15th anniversary since its founding.
