The Minister of Agriculture and Food of Bulgaria, Dr. Georgi Takhov, and his Iraqi counterpart, Mr. Abbas Jabr Al-Maliki, signed a Memorandum of Understanding to expand the partnership between the two ministries. The document was signed during the official visit of Minister Al-Maliki to Bulgaria from June 2 to 6, 2025.
The main purpose of the Memorandum is to stimulate the exchange of knowledge, scientific and technical achievements, trade in agricultural and food products, as well as the implementation of joint projects. Minister Takhov expressed confidence that the cooperation will deepen, emphasizing the importance of the Iraqi market for Bulgarian producers and processors. He stated that Bulgaria can offer safe and high-quality food, as well as live animals, raised in compliance with the highest standards.
Minister Al-Maliki noted that product deliveries can be made within two days. The two ministers agreed to send expert groups that will discuss current issues related to bilateral cooperation every three months.
Bulgarian-Iraqi relations in the agricultural sector are characterized by a positive trade balance for Bulgaria. In 2024, the value of exported agricultural products amounted to $137.7 million - an increase of nearly 28% compared to the previous year. The main export product is sunflower oil, and among other products are hatching eggs, live cattle, food and bakery products. Agricultural imports from Iraq remain minimal - $1.3 million, mainly truffles and frozen mushrooms.
Minister Takhov emphasized the potential for joint work in the field of agricultural science, digitalization, adaptation to climate change, and water resource management. A proposal was made to strengthen institutional links between the research centers of the two countries and participate in bilateral seminars.
