On a momentous day for European integration, Bulgaria officially removes border checks with Romania, marking the 40th anniversary of the Schengen Area. The event was accompanied by a visit from high-ranking European and national representatives, including Interior Minister Daniel Mitov, European Commissioner Magnus Bruner, and Greek Deputy Minister Sevvi Voloudaki.
During the official ceremony at the Kulata - Promachonas border checkpoint, Mitov emphasized the strategic importance of this step. "Discontinuing border checks represents a concrete advancement towards full European integration," the minister stated, highlighting the expected increase in tourist and trade exchange.
A key moment in his statement was the commitment to countering cross-border crime. Despite liberalizing the border regime, Bulgarian authorities will continue to apply so-called "compensatory measures" – targeted control based on in-depth risk analysis.
The joint inspection involving Border Police, National Revenue Agency, Customs Agency, and other services demonstrated a comprehensive approach to security. Statistics show an increase in detection of drug trafficking and illegal migrant attempts after border opening.
European Commissioner Magnus Bruner added that this process is part of the continuous improvement of the Schengen system. "Our primary goal is to achieve better interstate cooperation and effective protection of European external borders," Bruner stated firmly.
Minister Mitov also outlined future challenges – improving infrastructure to ensure faster and more convenient movement for Bulgarian and European citizens. The event symbolizes another step towards full European integration and removal of administrative barriers.
