The Bulgarian alphabet on a 2-euro coin – why are there objections?

The first Bulgarian commemorative 2-euro coin, dedicated to the Cyrillic alphabet, is the subject of a procedural debate in the European Union. Although it is part of the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB) program, the project has encountered an unexpected obstacle.

According to EU regulation, eurozone countries have the right to object to a design if they believe it could provoke adverse reactions among their citizens.

What is the reason for the objection?

According to a document from the Council of the EU, the project was submitted on May 20, 2024, but an objection was received from an unnamed member state on May 27. It is important to note that:

  • The BNB does not find issues with compliance with technical requirements.
  • The approval procedure has not been completed.
  • The central bank will not comment on details until the process is finalized.

At the moment, the examination of the case goes beyond the scope of a standard expert-technical assessment. Official information is expected after the final completion of the procedure.
