A message that soothes and affirms Sofia's position on one of the most sensitive issues on the international stage was broadcast late last night. During a joint briefing with the President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, Bulgarian Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov officially stated that the country will not send its troops to the territory of Ukraine. The decision, which, according to the Prime Minister, is final and was made by the National Assembly, outlines the clear boundaries of Bulgaria's involvement in supporting Kyiv.
Zhelyazkov's statement came against the backdrop of a visit by the high-ranking European guest, who arrived in Bulgaria as part of a tour of the capitals of the EU member states. The purpose of Costa's visit is to gather opinions and exchange views on current European and international issues, as well as to learn about the priorities of the individual countries regarding the Multiannual Financial Framework. The meeting between the two leaders took place in an atmosphere of anticipation, with the eyes of the attending media focused on the official spokesperson who was to provide clarity on a number of key topics.
Prime Minister Zhelyazkov emphasized that despite the refusal of a direct military presence, Bulgaria will fulfill its commitments as part of the so-called "Coalition of the Willing". He detailed that the country's participation will be expressed in the provision of auxiliary mine countermeasures vessels, as well as airport and other auxiliary infrastructure. This is fully consistent with the earlier decision of the National Assembly and emphasizes Sofia's pragmatic approach to international aid.

These words of the Prime Minister are a natural continuation of his earlier participation in a video conference call with heads of state and government from the "Coalition of the Willing". During this meeting, Zhelyazkov emphasized the exceptional role of security guarantees as a "foundation for achieving a lasting and sustainable peace". Bulgaria's position, expressed in this communication, clearly shows that the country supports the efforts for stabilization, but at the same time insists on a cautious and well-measured approach. The choice to provide logistical and auxiliary support instead of sending troops reflects the government's desire to maintain a balance between its international obligations and domestic political sentiment.
