On June 4, 2025, the European Commission (EC) and the European Central Bank (ECB) confirmed that Bulgaria has met all economic and legislative requirements for the adoption of the single European currency. The President of the EC, Ursula von der Leyen, defined the euro as a "symbol of European strength and unity," and the accession to the eurozone as an important step towards deeper integration of the country into the European Union.

Before the final transition to the euro, Bulgaria is to receive final approval from the EU Council, after discussions in the Eurogroup, the European Council, and an opinion from the European Parliament. The adoption of the common currency is not only an economic act, but also an expression of belonging to European values such as democracy, the rule of law, and a commitment to sustainable development.
