Act 15 for the National Radioactive Waste Repository (NRWR)

At the end of March of the year 2026 – a year that is already shaping up as a key one in the calendar – Act 15 for the completion of the National Radioactive Waste Repository (NRWR) will be signed. This was announced to the media by engineer Dilyan Petrov, Executive Director of the State Enterprise "Radioactive Waste". He emphasized that this is the final deadline, which will be strictly adhered to.

According to the information provided, the total sum for the construction of this key facility amounts to 75 million euros. The funding is provided by the International Kozloduy NPP Fund. Currently, 65 million euros have been paid to the contractors. The remaining part of the funds will be transferred upon the completion of the repository and its commissioning.

The chief engineer of the NRWR, Ira Stefanova, specified that the construction work on the site was completed in July of the year 2024. Nevertheless, finishing works are pending, which are an integral part of the process of preparing the facility for its main function.

The purpose of the National Repository is categorically defined: it will serve for the storage of processed and secured radioactive waste generated solely on the territory of Bulgaria, explained engineer Stefanova. Low- and intermediate-level waste will be stored in it. The plan provides for the repository to be filled gradually over a period of six decades. After this period, the facility will be closed and subjected to constant control for a period of three centuries.
