Student councils in Burgas discuss the future of child participation

On 18.05.2026 at 15:00, an important meeting with representatives of student councils from schools in the Burgas region will be held at the Sea Casino Cultural Center, "Georgi Baev" Hall. The initiative is being implemented with the support of the Regional Department of Education – Burgas and the Municipality of Burgas.

The main goal of the event is to acquaint young people with the procedure for selecting members of the Child Council for 2026 to the State Agency for Child Protection.

Why is child participation important?

  • The Child Council was established in 2003 in implementation of the UN Convention.
  • It is a body that gives a voice to young people in decision-making regarding their development, education, and leisure time.
  • Representatives from every administrative region participate in the council, including quotas for vulnerable groups.

How to become part of the Child Council?

Students aged between 13 and 16 can apply for membership. The procedure goes through the municipal, regional, and national levels. During the meeting in Burgas, attendees will learn:

  • How the Child Council functions;
  • What the role of the members is in the decision-making process;
  • What the steps and conditions for a successful application are.
